Kumbha Mela in 60 secs

Kumbha Mela has a hidden purpose you don’t know … so here’s the tea.

You may hear many puranic & even misquoted vedic stories explaining the origin, like the Samudra Manthan angle, but there are very few authentic citations to prove them so they are mostly symbolic folklore or narratives written to help you make sense of the event.

Rationally, however, Kumbha Mela is just a result of Sanatan Dharma’s biggest goal, which is bringing all kinds of people together, putting them on the same level regardless of their income, occupation & group, and then encouraging them to join hands in pursuing spirituality towards moksha or liberation.

If you notice the 4 locations where it happens i.e. Prayagraj in UP, Haridwar in Uttarakhand, Nashik-Trimbak in Maharashtra, and Ujjain in MP - you’ll realise these cities are strategically important due to the major rivers they bank on, from Saraswati, Yamuna & Ganga to Godavari & Shipra.

This makes them natural meeting points for people to easily travel to, gather, sustain themselves and take temporary shelter.

But more than that, Kumbha gained prominence in bringing together the main Akhadas i.e. schools of Hinduism worshipping different Ishta Devas (Vaishnav, Shaiva, Udasin i.e. Sikh + Hindu), which taught not just knowledge but also weaponry & fighting to help Hindus defend their temples & land from Mughal invaders, a practice which was inspired by Sri Adi Shankaracharya who revived Hinduism in our land.

These groups have historically met to discuss their teachings, learnings & insights, with kings even sponsoring lectures, debates, discourses & discussions to educate the masses. Many gurus also come here to give dikshas i.e. initiation into mantras or their sects so for people who have wanted to come back to their Hindu roots, this has been the historical chance.

All of this technically makes Kumbha the world’s oldest & original conference & networking event, carefully designed by our ancestors to keep our community strong & true to its core principles.

So remember that Kumbha is more than its famous purification ritual of dipping in the holy water, which isn’t how it works - it is a way to remember & firm up your resolve to protect, preserve & promote Dharma.
