What is the Kama Gita? (Lessons on Desire)
You’ve heard of the Kama Sutra by Vatsyayana.
But did you know Sri Krishna spoke a Kama Gita? And it will completely rewire how your brain sees your desires.
So here’s the tea!
So this text is just 21 verses long so it’s quite a breezy read. It’s found in the Mahabharata’s Ashvamedhika Parva right after the war. Yudhishthira has won the throne but lost almost everyone. So drowning in guilt & depression, he wants to drop his duties and run away from his problems. Sounds relatable, right?
Krishna’s first point to him is that changing things outside doesn’t change you inside. Delete Instagram, quit your job, move to the mountains. But if the craving’s still running in your head, you’ve only changed your address.
Then he names the real problem in one line. “Mama”, mine, two syllables, is the end. “Na mama”, not mine, is eternal. The problem isn’t desire. It’s the feeling of “mine” i.e. possessiveness or control. My job, my salary, my image, my partner.
A king who owns the whole earth without that “mine” is free. A hermit in the forest clinging to his few things lives in the mouth of the end.
Secondly, Krishna says you can’t fight desire by suppressing or forcefully trying to control it. He quotes Kama, the deity of Desire itself, who says: “You can’t end me with force. I will come back as the weapon. Fight me with rituals and charity, I come back as pride. And the one chasing moksha? I dance and laugh at him. I alone am eternal.”
Because even wanting liberation is still wanting.
So point number three, the solution, isn’t trying to stop your desires.
Instead, you have to point it at dharma. Craving recognition? Do excellent work that matters. Want to look good? Train for your body, not the Instagram post. Want a partner? Become someone worth choosing. Channelise & re-direct that burning fire inside you to build something that’s greater than yourself & will outlast you.
The Kama Gita is a short but must-read for Gen-Zs who are trying to remove deep addictions with unnecessary & temporary dopamine detoxes that just don’t work!
