Kumbha Mela’s 12 Years, explained
What’s the deal with Kumbha Mela’s 12 Years calculation? Here’s the tea.
In Hindu jyotish shashtra, the navgrahas act as our 9 buddies in different areas of life - the planets we see in space act like their symbols so we track their movements to make sense of their subtle influences on thoughts & actions.
Of these, Brihaspati is the Principal or Guru - standing for wisdom, guidance & progress. So its fitting that his mascot Jupiter is the largest planet & it takes 12 human years to go around the Sun.
So given His larger-than-life influence over us, every 12 years, we hold a gathering as a gesture to share the spiritual growth we’ve gained in this cycle, leading to the ultimate completion i.e. moksha.
We also have smaller yearly & 6-yearly gatherings in between.
But the reason the main show happens at 4 places separately is because Brihaspati’s position in different places in space, which we’ve divided using rashis, also has unique meanings.
Moreover, when we consider its alignments with Surya i.e. Sun, who gives us energy & Chandra i.e. Moon, who governs our emotions - it has unique effects.
So we visit the 4 places assigned as per the planetary combos over the years to gain specific feelings or energies.
+ Haridwar = purification, renewal of life
+ Ujjain = power, royalty, sovereignty, victory
+ Nashik = passion & strength, vitality, penance
+ Prayag = unity of material + spiritual, balance (moksha)
The planetary alignments for each of the places are as follows (in relation to Moon Signs, not Sun Signs):
+ Haridwar = Jupiter in Aquarius, Sun in Aries, Moon in relevant nakshatra
+ Prayag = Jupiter in Taurus, Sun in Capricorn, Moon in relevant nakshatra
+ Ujjain = Jupiter in Leo, Sun in Aries, Moon in relevant nakshatra
+ Nashik = Jupiter in Leo, Sun in Cancer, Moon in relevant nakshatra
So, Kumbha Mela’s 12 years & 4 locations aren’t arbitrary or random - the numbers have a deep purpose & meaning rooted in the values of our culture that help us grow in life.
