Decoding Vastu Shastra - Part 2

Let’s simplify Vastu Shastra for Gen-Zs - Part 2!

The reference point for all directions is that you should be standing at the centre of your house plot i.e. the Brahmasthaan, which should be kept free & clean. This is ruled by the element “akasha” or space/ether/sky. From here, you can take out your mobile & use any free compass app to start navigating.

From there, we first go to the North East. There’s a reason why we start here & why this Vastu Purusha Mandala diagram has the head of the guy pointing North East.

That’s because, while Surya, our Sun, rises in the east, Earth’s titled axis causes the early soft & fresh rays to first reach the north-east. That’s Ishanaya, ruled by a form of Shiva called Ishana.

The elements here are fluid i.e. primarily water or jala (followed by vayu or air), so this direction is about spirituality, growth, mental clarity & purity.

As such, it’s the most auspicious direction as per Vastu & should ideally be clean + clutter-free. It’s great for pooja rooms or even the entrance of your house but bad if you keep your bathroom here as it is a heavy, less positive room & cluttering.

Next to Ishanya is the East, called Purva, ruled by Indra. Since this is where the Sun rises, its marked by new beginnings, growth & health - making its element vayu i.e. the free-flowing strong air.

It can also have the house’s main entrance or living room. Just avoid placing bathrooms & storage over here as heavy rooms can block the energy flow.
