NCERT released Understanding Society: India and Beyond, Part 2 for Class IX, covering 1000 to 1700 CE. It describes Mughal "brutality" against the Sikh Gurus as having "few comparisons in history", covers Arab and Turkish invasions and Jat, Rajput, Maratha and Ahom resistance, and includes a chapter titled "Temples: The Resilience of Sacred Sites".

Key data

Covers Mahmud of Ghazni's first invasion in 1001, the Jat uprising of 1669, the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 and the founding of the Khalsa in 1699.

Why it matters

It is the biggest reframing yet of the medieval period in the national curriculum, and political pushback is likely.
