What is Adhik Masa? (Extra Month)
You just entered a spiritually cool month & most Hindus don't know it! We’re in the Adhik Maas & here's the tea!
To keep things simple, you first have to understand that we Sanatanis follow a luni-solar calendar, the Panchang.
Our seasons follow the Sun as usual, but our exact festival dates are calculated by the Moon's daily phases, called Tithis. But the problem is that the Moon's year is only 354 days - because it completes its cycle around us roughly every 29.5 days.
On the other hand, the Sun's solar year is roughly 365 days, that’s how long it takes us to move around it. This creates an 11-day gap between the two.
If this gap is left unchecked, the calendar would drift completely out of sync with nature. Imagine celebrating Diwali - which must hit the dark Amavasya night of autumn - in the middle of a summer afternoon. It wouldn't make sense!
To fix this, the experts of Vedanga Jyotisha Shastra got to work, and their ideas were later refined by astronomers like Aryabhata, Bhaskara II & Varahamihira, who gave us a brilliant mathematical rule.
If one entire moon month passes without the Sun also transitioning into a new zodiac sign or Rashi in the sky - a process called Sankranti - that entire period is declared a surplus month, allowing the lunar calendar to catch up with the solar one.
This structural reset happens once every 32.5 months, or every 2-3 years, once a 30-something day gap is accumalated. And we're actually in it right now, from 17th May to 15th June.
Adhik Masa is mentioned in both the Padma Purana and the Mahabharata, so it's a fully legitimate concept. The interesting part is that while some sects call it Mala Masa - the impure month - and avoid new businesses, marriages, housewarmings or ceremonies, the Vaishnavas, worshipping Vishnu, see it as Purushottama Masa.
Since this month carries no assigned festivals, it becomes pure space for devotion - bhakti, satsang, and surrender. Chanting the Vishnu Sahasranama, reading the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, and above all, doing charity or donating food is considered karmically powerful in this month.
So if you've been hesitating to support any welfare cause, now's a great time to sponsor a meal for a hungry child or animal.
