Sanātana Explained

Hindu Phrases every Sanatani should know! (Part 2)

Every Hindu or Sanatani should know these 7 phrases because they’re part of our core culture & roots!

BTW, check out Part 1 on my feed & thanks to you guys for more amazing suggestions, so here’s the tea.

✏️ 1) Brahma Satyam, Jagat Mithya

This is the ultimate simplified summary of all our Vedantic teachings.

It comes from Sri Adi Shankaracharya’s Vivekachudamani, which explains that the Brahman is the only true reality, this entire universe is relative illusion.

Basically, whenever you feel overwhelmed in life, just remember that all of this world is only temporary & false, and your true inner self, the Atman which is actually the Brahman, is already at peace because it is the only immortal truth.

✏️ 2) Karmanye Vadhikaraste, Ma Phaleshu Kadachana -

One of the most famous lines from our culture, this comes from Srimad Bhagavad Gita’s Chapter 2, Verse 47.

In which Sri Krishna reminds us that we only have the right to perform our duties & grind hard, giving the effects of karma fairly is God’s job, so focus on putting your effort everyday, and stop expecting or getting attached to the outcomes.

✏️ 3) Vidhya Dadaati Vinayam -

This is a kind of Hitopadesha, a wise saying.

It means that true knowledge always brings humility.

Our Hindu culture doesn’t pride itself on learning & knowing more, it says that the wisest people in the room are the most humble & open to feedback, different opinions or proper dialogue, knowing that they still have a lot more to learn.

✏️ 4) Paropakarah Punyaya, Papaya Paripidanam -

If you ever get confused with what is the common single teaching of all our Puranas, this line simplifies it by explaining, “Doing good to others leads to merit (Punya), and causing harm to others leads to sin (Papa).”

This is the simplest definition of how the karmic law works.

✏️ 5) Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam -

This is found in the Maha Upanishad as verse no. 72. It explains that those who live with the mindset that this is mine, and that is a stranger or outsider to me is the sign of narrow-minded people.

The truly big-hearted think of the entire Earth as their family. And we should work in harmony with each other.

✏️ 6) Ati Sarvatra Varjayet -

This has its roots in Chanakya Niti & is part of our Maha Subhashita Sangraha book which compiles all such cool sayings.

It explains that anything in too much excess - extreme pride, extreme charity, extreme consumption - will definitely lead to destruction.

So we need to moderate everything, living a balanced & minimalist life.

✏️ 7) Matru Devo Bhavah, Pitru Devo Bhavah, Acharya Devo Bhava, Atithi Devo Bhava - ✏️

This instruction comes from the Taittiriya Upanishad, which reminds us to treat our mom, dad, guru teachers, and guests with the utmost hospitality, service & gratitude.

Imagine - such beautiful & modern thinking has already existed in our culture since centuries. So why look anywhere else?
