Sanātana Explained

What are the 8 siddhis of Hanuman Chalisa?

Before Marvel’s Antman made it cool, our Hanuman did it ages ago. Here are the 8 of the coolest superpowers we can acquire in Sanatan Dharma.

In Chalisa, you’ve got a line saying “Ashta Siddhi, Nau Nidhi ke Data, As Bar Din Janaki Mata” in which Sita Mayya blesses Hanuman & tells him he’d be able to bless others, too, with 8 special powers as Siddhi means accomplishment or skill. It’s possible for rishis or any of us to get it through the rigrous practice of Ashtanga Yoga or the 8 spiritual limbs, which I’ll cover later.

Anima & Mahima mean the powers to shrink oneself to an atomic level & enlarge one’s body to crazy proportions. So that’s how Hanuman could move so easily through Lanka & be big enough to lift mountains.

IRL, these 2 powers translate into the importance of having a small or selfless ego but big ambitious dreams

Garima & Laghima mean the abilities to increase or decrease your weight so that’s why Hanuman was immovable in Ravan’s court & he/other Gods were able to fly after becoming light as a feather.

IRL, these powers mean to remain unshakable when it comes to our ethics & moral values but be flexible when it comes to adapting to life’s circumstances.

Prapti means the ability to conjure up whatever one wants, whic his how you have Gods creating objects from thin air. IRL this asks us to focus all our energies on our goals.

Prakyama has a range of sub-powers like teleportation, increasing one’s life span & living underwater.

Isitva means the abiltiy to influence nature so that’s how rishis or Gods can make it rain on their will.

And Vasitva means the ability to control others’ minds, which IRL asks us to inspire others through example.
