Sanātana Explained

How many Hindu Gods exist?

We don’t have 33 or 330 million Gods in Hinduism - that’s a myth & here’s the tea.

First, in Sanatan Dharma, we know that God or the ultimate Super Soul, which is called Brahman, is nirgun i.e. formless, faceless, genderless & timeless.

But when this Nirgun rup steps into the universe it has created, it follows its laws & appears to us as sagun, taking various forms to create, preserve & destroy, along with maintaining different aspects.

Now here people think 33 koti Gods means crores but it actually means supreme or primal deities.

This set of 33 includes the 8 vasus which are the elements around us, such as vayu, agni & Sun (surya).

It has 12 Adityas corresponding to the 12 months that keep the universe moving, such as Vishnu, Indran, Mitra & Varuna.

And we have 11 Rudras which represent the forces living in our body, which all follow Lord Shiva, which is why he is called the Maharudra.

Lastly, you have the 2 Ashwini Kumars which are the doctors to the Gods.

Other forms of Ganesh, Saraswati, Vitthal, Sri Ram, etc. are all real or avaters of the main ones & they have their own job descriptions, which makes it easy for mortals like you & me to see & appreciate the whole concept of God according to what we like & want, so through their bhakti we can ultimately understand the infinite.

The twist in the story is that these are Gods we know in this manvantara i.e. cycle in time & there might be other Gods in another manvantara.
