Gitas you didn’t know about!
What if I said the Gita you’ve heard of or read is NOT the only one?
Here’s the tea.
When it comes to Sanatan Dharma, the most popular text we know is the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, which is basically a chat between the warrior Arjuna & Sri Krishna on the battlefield of Mahabharata.
But Gita basically means songs, and Sanatan is an ocean of these songs each helping us get to the truth about who we are from different POVs.
So we also have other Gitas like Ashtavakra, Avadhuta, Vashishta, and Uddhava - each of them having interesting ideas beyond the ones you’ll find in the SBG.
Avadhuta Gita is credited to Dattatreya, the hybrid combo avatar of Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva. It is a go-to book on Advaita philosophy, which says God, Us & the universe are one & the same, not different.
Ashtavakra is also another Advaita philosophy text book, credited to the rishi with the same name, and recognized by scholars like Swami Vivekananda as well as Ramana Maharishi.
Uddhava Gita is credited to Krishna again, who gives some tips to Uddhava before his body leaves the Earth.
Apart from these main ones, there are, in fact, many more Gitas, and while not as popular and/or authoritative, they still have cool concepts to study for us.
This list includes:
