Yama is not who you think he is!
Have you ever heard people say Hindus also have a Devil called Yama?
No, Yama isn’t Satan, nor is he not evil. He’s not even technically the God of Death. Here’s the tea.
Yama comes from yam - which means restraint - he literally guides & restrains your soul from wandering into nothingness after you die, ensuring Dharma or justice is done as per your karmic deeds in the moral world.
In Sanatan Dharma, we don’t exactly have punishment. We have correction and cleansing. So even the biggest criminals just face consequences for their karmas - and Yama oversees that - he doesn’t cause you to die.
He’s the son of Surya, the Sun God, and he was the first mortal to die. He has a twin sister Yami, who as per the Rigveda, tries to seduce him into creating life since they’re the first mortal beings, but Yama refuses because it wouldn’t be ethical.
Because of his righteous life, when he is the first to die, he becomes the path-shower for all others who would follow, acting as the King of Yamaloka - the auditing facility of the universe.
Yama rides a fierce black buffalo - a symbol of his strength and justice.
When your time's up, you will start seeing his Yamadootas, the soul collectors, who will come to separate you from your body. They look scary, but don’t fight or fear them - just let them do their jobs.
After about 12 months journeying through realms, you reach Yama’s gates, where you can pet his two guard doggos, Shabala and Shyama.
Inside, our Chief Auditor Chitragupta - Yama’s divine scribe - reads out your karma report card. Based on it, Yama decides your next step: a heavenly realm, a new body, or temporary stay in Naraka - where you burn off your bad karmas.
Yama isn’t a sadist. He’s Dharmaraja - the king of fairness. His job is to maintain cosmic law, not to hate anyone for no reason.
Even when tempted, Yama always chose dharma over shortcuts. So he’s actually the best boss to have - firm, strict but always fair and just, so he’ll always protect the good and correct the bad.
So don’t fear Yama. Fear doing bad karma.
