Follow-up to the SBG - Anu Gita
Did you know there’s a sequel to our famous Srimad Bhagavad Gita?
Here’s the tea.
Years after the Kurukshetra war, Krishna & Arjuna are chilling in their palace & Arjuna, having forgotten Krishna’s divine lessons, asks him to do a rewind show.
Krishna says, “No bro, I was tripping in my yogic state then, so I can’t repeat everything word-to-word, but I’ll give you a summary with anecdotes.”
This talk, approximately a thousand verses spread over 36 chapters, is what forms the Anu Gita in the Aśvamedhika Parva of the Mahabharata.
In contrast to SBG which has karma i.e. hard work & bhakti i.e. devotion as its main theme, Anu focuses more on jnana i.e. knowledge of our inner Atman, which as per Advaita philosophy, is the same as the Brahman i.e. the Higher Self or God.
Anu has some interesting & practically useful ideas on:
+ Who are we & how to get liberation
+ Why internal sacrifice of ego+desire >>>> external rituals
+ What are good habits every Hindu should follow
It also has interesting theories on how the biology of our body & the structure of our mind works.
All of this is told to us in the form of fictional dialogues, fables, tales or stories, to making the ideas easier to grasp.
While it’s more philosophical & arguably less fun than the SBG, it’s still a good read & appendix to refresh Krishna’s main teachings.
