Anant Pai

Do you remember reading Tinkle & Amart Chitra Katha comics as a child? There was a cultural mastermind behind them - which is Sri Anant Pai & here’s his story.

Pai was born in Karnataka in 1929 & his parents passed away, so he was raised by his relatives & grew up with his cousins.

He did some social work with the reformer Vinobha Bhave & then also tried his hand at magazine publishing & worked for book companies & newspaper press.

One day, he & his wife Lalita were walking past a TV Store, which was playing a kids’ quiz show - the participants quickly answered a question on Greek Mythology but struggled to answer who was Sri Ram’s mom, a very basic question.

Pai was concerned that the young generation doesn’t have the materials to know & learn about our own Bharatiya culture, Sanatan Dharma & regional history.

So he saw the dream of launching India’s first cultural comics.

He took the idea to India Book House & after some convincing & negotiating a deal to start with fairy tales, he eventually launched the first edition of the Amar Chitra Katha comics with the title “Krishna” in 1967 - Amar here, standing, for our immortal stories.

ACK actually wasn’t profitable for a few years so Pai put on a marketer’s hat, going to medical stores, book stores, doctor clinics’ waiting rooms, and schools to promote his book.

He used brilliant marketing activations like school quizzes, competitions, free reading days at centers, to get kids excited. And it paid off!

Pai & his team’s work is the reason why Hindu values & teachings, which were restricted to either theoretical books & dense long Puranas, reached entire generations of kids through simple, fun & exciting storytelling.

He expanded beyond the cultural cannon with Tinkle in 1980, which was full of GK & moral-based stories, which made him every kid’s favourite “Uncle Pai” - India’s very own Stan Lee.

Pai condensed huge epics like Mahabharata into 42 relevant & bingeable comics & today, storytellers like Divyansh, who is doing the same thing on IG Reels, are taking our culture forward.

So if you want the next gen to be proudly Hindu, you need to be a good storyteller.
