Why is Gayatri Mantra so powerful?
Do you know why Grandma & Grandpa told you to say the Gayatri Mantra in the morning? What’s the meaning? Here’s the tea.
First, the word Gayatri refers to the mother of our Vedas - she’s the mix of 3 main Goddesses, Parvati, Lakshmi & Saraswati who each have their powers & place in Hinduism. The 5 heads you see represent the 5 elements or panchbhuta.
You’ll find this mantra in the Rigveda & that’s why the Gayatri Mantra is said to be the mother of all mantras.
Om Bhur Bhuva Svaha
It means you’re calling the om, the Creator of the earth i.e. physical, the Astral i.e. soul, and the Heavanly i.e. celestial Planes.
Tat Savitur Varenyam
You’re praying to the source of all reality which is worthy of worship
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
You’re meditating on the divine spirit of God & the spiritual reality of this world
Dhiyo Yo Na Pracho Dayat
You’re requesting that your mind or intellect be boosted by God.
So the Mantra is not just for Savitra which is the God of the east rising Sun but going beyond that, we’re praying to the Para Bhraman which means the ultimate God, which is why you can use this Mantra no matter which God you personally believe in or group of Hinduism you belong to.
