Why do we use Camphor/Kapoor in aartis?
You know why we Hindus use camphor or “kapoor” during our aartis, havans & pujas? Here’s the tea!
Camphor comes from Asia’s native camphor laurel tree, scientifically known as Cinnamomum camphora. It’s organic formula is C₁₀H₁₆O.
From a symbolic POV, camphor is white & pure like our soul & God, so when it burns in agni, which is considered God, it leaves nothing behind - so it’s a reminder that our bodies are also temporary & through social service, sacrifice & prayers, by removing our self-ego, we will become one with the Bhraman i.e. the Supreme Soul, a process which is called moksha or samadhi.
Interestingly, there’s science involved here like in everything we do in Sanatan Dharma. First, camphor can kill bacteria, fungi & microbes so burning it during aartis purifies the air in the house or temple. It can also repel insects, preventing diseases.
Second, it can clear your nasal passage, thus helping with breathing & also have a very cooling, calming effect on your mind, relieving stress, unblocking your 7 chakras & boosting your spirits. The essence of camphor is also good for your skin & mind overall, so when you put your hand over the fire & rub the heat on your face, you feel peaceful & fresh.
