Why do great Gurus fall sick? (Karma 101)

If our spiritual masters are truly enlightened, why do they still get cancer or fall severely ill? If they have achieved self-realization, shouldn't they be immune to physical suffering?

That’s a great question but it’s not how karma works & here’s the tea!

To understand this, we need to clear the basics. There are 3 types of karma based on time.

First is Sanchita, which is the massive storage vault of all your past actions across lifetimes. Second is Prarabdha, the specific slice of karma withdrawn from the vault to sustain your current physical life. And the third is Agami, the new karma you are generating right now, which eventually becomes your sanchita.

So these 3 work in a loop.

But based on motivation, we have 2 more types - Sakama & Nishkama. Sakama is selfish work filled with expectations for results & returns, it keeps you trapped in the cycle.

Nishkama is selfless work done in service of others & God - it breaks you out with a VIP pass to God’s home.

Now putting the 2 concepts together, when a guru achieves Jivanmukti, or liberation, it is because of their Nishkama karma, which burns their entire storage vault of Sanchita karma & stops them from creating any new Agami karma.

But their physical body is still bound by Prarabdha karma. Without it, the body would simply collapse.

If their Prarabdha blueprint contains fixed, intense & unavoidable elements - like a severe disease - the body must run its course. The biological machine will suffer the effects, but because their soul is liberated, they do not experience the psychological pain or misery that we do.

Also, in many cases, true gurus willingly absorb the karmic burdens of their disciples, exhausting those debts through their own physical bodies so the disciple is spared.

Being a servant of God does not mean a master's body doesn't require modern medicine or hospitals. And a physical disease certainly does not invalidate their enlightenment.

Let us stop questioning the heroes of our Dharma and start understanding the sciene of karma.
