Understanding our Vedas - Part 2
You know there are 4 vedas in Sanatan Dharma but has anyone explained their meaning?
Also where can you read them?
Here’s the tea.
Vedas are actually compilations of hundreds of different texts just categorized into 4 parts.
The oldest one, Rig veda, stemming from Rik which means to worship the righteous, has mantras, hymns & verses praising Gods like Agni, Indra & Varuna. It explains the origins of the universe, the nature of God i.e. Brahman & also contains roots of the Gayatri Mantra.
The second, Sama veda, coming from saman i.e. song, was derived from many of the contents of the Rig veda, and its like a cheatcode book containing info on how to pronounce & sing the hyms, so its often called as the veda of sound or melodies because it heavily explains how to musically chant properly to connect with God. It
The third, Yajur veda, stems from Yajur i.e. rituals or worship, and its like the manual for conducting sacrifies, yagnas, rituals & other holy practices. The Yajur vedaa is divided into Shukla & Krishna, or black & white halves.
The fourth, Atharva veda, comes from Atharvan, the fire priest & is the most modern as well as practical veda - with details on healthly living, natural medicines, protection from harm, and healing. It has a focus on daily prayers or hymns.
But a disclaimer - Vedas aren’t for beginners - you’ll mostly get bored & confused with the endless praise of Gods & lofty cryptic language.
So what are some more accessible books you can read to know more?
