Tummbad’s Hastar Shadaripu Theory

If you loved the Haster character in Tummbad, which just re-released in theatres, here’s a wild theory you should know.

While Haster & the Devi are fictional characters & not form our scriptures, the idea of greed or lalach that he represents is taken from the ancient Hindu concept of Arishadvargas or 6 vices (shadaripus), which are the enemies of the mind, blocking are spiritual growth.

This is reflected in Christian concept of the 7 Deadly Sins, too.

They are:

1) Lobha - Greed

2) Kama - Lust

3) Krodha - Anger

4) Moha - Delusion or Attachment

5) Madha - Pride

6) Matsarya - Jealousy

In Tummbad, we see all these 6 vices come into play.

Starting with Lobha obviously, which leads to the dadi, Vinayak, and his son Panduranga, losing everything in the end.

Both the men are also seen to be overtaken by kama, and Vinayak explicitly takes a mistress, also introducing his son to prostitution.

We also see Vinayak’s complicated krodha at his mom & then son after he fails to have a good relationship with them.

And Vinayak’s friend meets his end because he gets jealous, too.

Underlying everything is Madha because Vinayak refuses to act humble, seeing his mom as weak, his knowledge of Hastar’s secret as his ability to control the world, and his strict upbringing of his son as if he’s the owner or master.

So what if in the Tummbad cinematic universe, we get to see connected stories of 5 more demons representing each of the vices & in the end, it all comes together in an epic battle!?
