The Truth about Sati
“You Hindus are so backward, you had Sati forcing widows to jump into fire.”
No, that’s one of the biggest myths about Sanatan Dharma & here’s the truth.
First, the word itself comes from the Sanskrit roots asa & sat, referring to virtuous, loyal women, and the connection to fire only came after Puranic accounts of Goddess Sati burning herself protesting her dad’s insult of Shiva.
But our Vedas themselves not only never mention sati; they discourage it. The Rigveda’s 10th Mandala 18th hymn, encourages grieving wives with the famous line “Rise woman, return to the land of living.”
But the last word “agre” was mistranslated into “agni” changing its meaning from “moving forward” to “moving into the fire.”
Even Mahabharata’s Madri story has the nuance of her doing it out of guilt, feeling responsible for husband Pandu’s death, not as a mandated custom, but not only do later lines contradict, implying it may have never happened, but we have Kunti & other wives continue living & having children.
When India faced centuries of Mughal invasions, the Hindu wives of our brave Rajput warriors were molested, imprisoned, converted & impregnated cruelly by Muslims so even the unfortunate Jauhar custom actually emerged out of need to protect the women’s dignity, not to shame her.
British records themselves show less than 0.002% of the total population having these cases, proving it was never a widespread tradition; and in fact, when they took unnecessary credit for banning it, they themselves admitted to Hindus debating it & being opposed to it.
But the Britishers, French & Portuguese European colonisers, all wanted to Christianise India & so they needed our Dharma to look bad, so missionaries & writers like William Carey, James Mill, Duperron, together led a mass smear campaign by fabricating records & inflating numbers grossly, using Sati as a weapon to weaken our faith, while they themselves burned 50,000 progressive or bold women under the witch trials of the 15th-17th century.
Books of historian authors like Meenakshi Jain are exposing this propaganda whose evil goal has always been to make us question our own faith.
