Sun Vs. Moon in Jyotish Shastra
Why do foreigners always talk about Sun Signs, but our Indian parents ask for your Moon Sign? And is this all just pseudoscience?
Let’s clear up the confusion.
Imagine the sky as a giant spinning pizza, cut into 12 slices - the zodiac signs - which both Western astrology and our Vedic Jyotish Shashtra agree on.
And they both track the Sun moving through this, because it’s our life force, symbolising our inner identity. But they differ on where the pizza begins.
In the West, they use the tropical zodiac - Aries, the first slice, always starts on 21st March, the Spring Equinox, when day and night are equal. It’s locked to Earth’s seasons. But there’s a problem … because the Earth wobbles like a spinning top, the seasonal zodiac calculations tend to drift off over time, about 1 degree every 72 years.
So in Jyotish, we use the sidereal zodiac - Mesha begins when the Sun actually enters that slice of the sky among the stars. That’s why in simple words, Jyotish is said to be more star-accurate. The tropical method likely arose from our method, making it more generic.
Now, here’s the twist. The West mostly cares about the Sun sign - your identity and life path. We also track that as Surya Rashi, but Jyotish gives more importance to the Moon sign - Chandra Rashi. Why? Because while the Sun takes 30 days to move through a slice, the Moon moves every 2.5 days, affecting your moods and emotions much more personally so its more granular.
Which means it’s not about the date on your birth certificate - it’s the exact time you were born. If the Moon was changing signs that day, two babies born just hours apart could have completely different Moon signs.
And even if they share it, Jyotish further divides the sky into 27 Nakshatras and 108 padas of the moon’s path, making each chart more unique.
In fact, Jyotish even adds a third element: the Lagna, or Ascendant. That’s the slice of sky rising in the East at your birth moment, symbolising the fresh start of your karmic reset, and it changes every 2 hours.
This Lagna becomes the starting point of your kundali, with 12 houses or bhavas. Then we place the nine deities, the Navagrahas, inside these houses to see which areas of life they influence - like career, marriage, health, or children.
So as you can see, its much more detailed … while Western astrology is like knowing the name of your pizza slice, Jyotish is like knowing the exact toppings, cheese, and spice mix on your slice at the exact moment you were born.
That said, Jyotish isn’t about fixed predictions. It’s about understanding what lessons your karma is teaching you, so you can grow wiser.
And there is no greater, more practically useful remedy to all our problems than social service. Helping the poor, serving society, and practicing kindness. That’s the truest protection against any force in the universe.
