Meaning of the word Ram
You say Jay Shri Ram but do you know the meaning of the word Ram? Here’s the tea.
Depending on which purana/text you read or which guru you consult, you’ll find a multi-layered meaning of this word, which kinda makes it all the more amazing.
First, you get the root words Ra & Ma, with Ra standing for fire i.e. agni, strength & the dissolution of the universe. And you’ve Ma, meaning mother, Lakshmi, or creation & birth.
One of the most basic concepts in Sanatan Dharma is the idea of life & death being parts of an endless cycle from which only God can liberate us.
So Rama encapsulates this very well with both connotations of beginnings & endings in one word. That’s why we say “Ram Nam Satya Hai” when someone’s passed away, as emotional support for the soul passing on to the next life & a reminder of the ultimate truth of the universe.
Rama as a word also derives from ram (pronounced as rum ) & rameti, which means the guy who enjoys & gives spiritual joy or pleasure to everyone who comes to him or chants his name.
Rama is often paired with the female counterpart energy Shri, which is Shakti, as seen in Sita or Lakshmi or Parvati, working with their male counterparts to create, preserve & destroy everything. So Shri Ram invokes the combination of these two, making the Ultimate Super Soul called the Brahman.
So Rama, even though, its such a small name, holds so much importance & that’s why we’re recommended to constantly recite it.
