Meaning of Saptapadi in Hindu Marriages
Why do we only do 7 pheras in Hindu marriages? Here’s the tea.
Of course, there are different versions, some even only have 4 to symbolize dhrama, artha, kama & moksha.
And the pheras or walking around the agni (fire) concept is a bit modern, too.
But in the OG shlokas, we have the concept of saptapadi which means seven steps, symbolizing the 7 prayers to Vishnu, along with the corresponding beautiful promises both partners take.
First, the couple promises to nourish each other with food, emotional support & other basic needs through happiness & sorrow.
Om ekameeshe vishnustvaa nayatu.
Second, you pray for & promise to give your partner strength, physical & mental.
Om dvay oorjje vishnustvaa nayatu.
Third, you promise to be together in each others’ joys & sorrows, also ensuring to preserve your wealth & prosper together.
Om trinirayasposhaaya vishnustvaa nayatu.
Fourth, we promise to be there for each other in joys & sorrows & take care of our elders & family.
Om chatvaarimaayo bhavaaya vishnustvaa nayatu.
Fifth, we walk together, take care of our children & pray for their long life & be generous in caring for all the creatures & people around them.
Om panchapashubhyo vishnustvaa nayatu.
Sixth, we will grow old together, through thick & thin, hopefully having a healthy & long life
Om Shadrutubhyo vishnustvaa nayatu.
Seventh, we become friends forever & ever, giving each other companionship for lifetime.
Om sakhesaptapadaa bhavasaamaam anuvrata-bhava vishnustvaa nayatu.
