Knowing Hayagriva - Vishnu’s Horse Avatar
You know about Vishnu’s Krishna & Narasimha, but did you know we’ve also got a Horse Avatar God in Hinduism? Here’s the tea.
The story of Hayagriva, the horse-necked form, begins in the Rig Veda, with a Rishi being granted Indra’s secret knowledge, which if he shared, would lead to him being beheaded. The Ashvins seeking this secret replace it with a horse’s head & when that’s slashed by Indra, they restore the OG.
In the Mahabharata, he’s seen both as a demon & the saviour, appearing at least four times in the epic. And in the Bhagvat Purana, we see him as a Vishnu avatar created specifically to protect, save & promote our Vedic knowledge by slaying the Madhu and Kaitabha demons who had stolen the Vedas from Brahma at the start of creation.
But the most definitive tale that has survived the test of time comes through the Devi-Bhagavat Purana, in which a demon named Hayagriva, too, receives a boon from the Supreme Devi that only a horse-headed being can destroy him.
He goes up against Vishnu, who’s unable to defeat him after a long battle. Exhausted, Vishnu takes a timeout, and as he’s resting on his bowstring, Devi sends a bunch of termites, who eat, break & snap the string, leading to Vishnu’s head being chopped off.
Fearful, the spectator Gods watching the fight turn to the divine architect Vishwakarma, who restores a horse’s head, creating Hayagriva.
Hayagriva has even travelled to Buddhism & Japanese cultures, too, but at his core worldwide, he actually gives us a very simple lesson & insight: For new knowledge to grow in your mind, the present ego & feeling of knowing something must be sliced off.
Hayagriva is like a Google of every path of knowledge open to mankind. That’s why he’s always seen holding the Vedas, probably the only avatar to do so.
As the figure of knowledge who survives his own decapitation, he’s a symbol for the teaching that our life is an act of constant re-learning & un-learning what you think you’ve already mastered.
His biggest temple shrine is in Thiruvahindrapuram in Tamil Nadu & you can also spot him at Hajo in Assam.
