Sanātana Explained

Is Kanyadaan a sexist practice?

Hinduism is so sexist, they even have kanyadaan at weddings. Not true, here’s the tea.

Daan is mistranslated as giving away, donation, charity, gifting or transferring but actually, it’s a pure offering of an energy you love & cherish personally like vidya or praan for the greater good & continuation of society.

We’re not donating women because when we say they are “dhan”, it doesn’t mean our property or wealth but rather the blessing from God (who owns all of us), which can make an entire house dhanya (happy).

So the Gen-Z meaning here is that parents are asking the guy to preserve their biggest happiness & meet her needs.

Instead of triggering words like “equal” or “unequal,” Hinduism logically says men & women are both important in their separate way, incomplete without one another. Women are Lakshmi, Prakriti or Shakti, the kinetic energy of the universe, existing not just to reproduce but to do creative stuff that Men, Purusha, Vishnu or Shiv, which is potential energy, cannot do.

Women can’t be inferior because while taking saptapadi, both the bride & groom must promise that they will not hurt each other, walking together at the same level to pursue the 4 goals of life - dharma, artha, kama & moksha i.e. moral duty, occupation, desire & liberation.

Some lines in our vedas & law books were writen in ancient times as per their norms & a lot of it has been misinterpreted by foreigners, who are mostly modern power-hungry men, so we don’t have to follow stuff that’s no longer applicable.

But Hinduism isn’t anti-feminist because we also do have putradaan so you can do that, too, and in fact, we have strict codes preventing sale of women, sex with minors, and even dowry.

Krishna himself rushed to protect Draupadi’s honor during her vastraharan so objectifying women is out of the question & a real Sanatani will always empower, respect, support & protect the girls in their lives.
