Female Heroes of Vedic Era (Summary)
Bro I only hear about guy rishis in Hinduism so does it mean Hinduism is patriarchal & against women?
No, the media often shows you distorted facts to weaken your faith & here’s the real tea.
First, the Vedas are considered apauruṣeya (not of human origin). They were revealed for the benefit of everyone, regardless of gender, caste, or background. Complementary verses emphasize that a husband and wife are equal partners, meant to walk together in life.
Now, here’s what they don’t tell you:
Many hymns in the Vedas were composed by Rishikas (female sages) like Vak Ambhrini, who wrote the famous Devi Sukta (Rigveda 10.125), Lopamudra, Apala, Ghosha, Sulabha, Saswati, Vishavara, Indrani & Apala Atryeyi. These women weren’t just passive participants but key contributors to sacred knowledge.
Moreover, women known as Brahmavadinis - like Gargi Vachaknavi, Maitreyi, and Sulabha Maitreyi - debated philosophy publicly and authored sections of texts like the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (3.6). We also have Katyayani, Romasha, Shaibhya, Chandramati & Vadava Prathiteyi.
During the Vedic era, women had the freedom to study, teach, and participate in intellectual and spiritual pursuits. While restrictions on certain rituals existed, they were often rooted in protecting female energy or addressing physiological differences - not because women were seen as inferior.
So no, Hinduism isn’t patriarchal. It recognizes both men and women as equals in the spiritual journey.
