Ancient India’s Biggest Contributions

You’re going to be shocked when you realise ancient India was much more advanced in STEM than today’s USA but they taught never taught us these things in school.

1. First, what we know as the Pythagoras theorem was first discovered by Baudhyan in his book Sulva Sutra in 800 BCE. He’s also one of the first ones along with Aryabhatta to explore the concept of Pi.

2. Our Bhaskaracharya wrote the Siddhanta Shirmonani in 12th century in which he talked about Leelavati (Arithmatic), Beejganit (Algebra), Golabhyay (Sphere) & astronomy - his work on calculus came way before Newton.

3. Talking about Newton & his 3 laws, our Maharishi Kanad talked a bit about motion in 6th Century BC - and he was also the one to come up with discoveries of parmanu i.e. atoms & molecular chemistry.

4. And you also obviously have Aryabhatta who introduced us to 0, talked about Pi & made theories about the Earth’s axis, the solar system & the eclipses were credited to by Galelio, Copernicus & others.

5. You have Pingala who created Pacal’s triangle before Pascal & Mahavicharya who created LCM before John Napier. Our Nagarjuna inspired the chemistry & metallurgy work of Arabs & our Varahamira wrote on ecology along with how to predict ground water & earthquakes, too.

5. In surgery, we had Sushruta who wrote about hundreds of surgeries & instruments, including plastic surgery, cateract, kidney stone extraction back in those days when we didn’t even have electricity.

6. Our Charaka & Atreya Rishi gave us the foundation of real authentic Ayurveda, explaining how the food we eat & the actions we do can affect the 3 doshas or forces in our body called “kapha, vata & pitta” which should be balanced to have a healthy life.
