Adi Shankaracharya

100 HINDU LEADERS #1 - Shankara
If you think you can’t change the world alone, you need to meet our first of 100 iconic Hindu thinkers - Sri Adi Shankaracharya.
He single-handedly revived and reorganized Hinduism at a time in the 8th century when Vedic thought was losing ground to Buddhism and Jainism.
Born in Kerala, Shankara turned to the renounced life of Vedic study as a child after losing his Dad, and travelled across India debating scholars, dying just at 32 - but not before giving us the gift of united Hindu thinking.
He did this in two powerful ways:
1) The Gift of Advaita
Shankara popuarlised the highest idea in Hindu thinking i.e. Advaita Vedanta - which says all our souls (Atman) are actually one single quality-less (Nirguna) reality called Brahman. By removing our ignorance (avidya), caused by illusion (maya), we acquire the knowledge (jnana) our our true selves.
But he did say that worshipping God in different forms (Saguna Brahman) is valid - as Shiva, Vishnu, Devi - because it builds devotion (bhakti), which leads to the true knowledge. This united different sects like Vaishnavas, Shaivas, and Shaktas, also inspiring the Smarta tradition which worships a group of deities together.
2) The Gift of Pilgrimage & Institutions
To anchor his teachings, Shankara established four mathas (monastic centers) in Sringeri (South), Dwarka (West), Puri (East), and Jyotirmath near Badrinath (North) - which preserved Advaita and trained generations of monks.
He also helped define the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit - Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameshwaram - creating a spiritual geography that united Hindus of India.
Many hymns are attributed to him (Bhaja Govindam, Soundarya Lahari, etc.) and different sects use these to celebrate him as one of their own, like fellow bhakta, not just an authoritative thinker.
But in reality, only a few works are confirmed as truly his:
+ Brahma Sutra Bhashya
+ Upanishad Bhashyas (on 10 principal Upanishads)
+ Bhagavad Gita Bhashya
+ Upadesha Sahasri
These texts form the bedrock of Vedanta philosophy even today.
So next time you think one person can’t make a dent - remember Shankara didn’t just make a dent. He rebooted an entire civilization.
