At a VHP programme marking the birth centenary of Ashok Singhal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said West Bengal will implement a Uniform Civil Code "after Uttarakhand and Gujarat" within six months. He also promised laws against what he called "love jihad" and "land jihad" and against religious conversion, along with cow protection and free distribution of the Gītā.
Key data
Six-month UCC timeline. No Durgā Pūjā inaugurations during Pitṛ Pakṣa, an alcohol ban on Aṣṭamī, and an upgrade of the Gaṅgāsāgar Melā to "international standards".
Why it matters
It is the first explicit UCC commitment by a West Bengal government and signals a Hindutva policy agenda in a state with a large minority population.
GK: did you know?
The Uniform Civil Code is a Directive Principle under Article 44 of the Constitution. Goa has followed a common civil code, the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867, since before it became part of India.
