Lakhs performed tarpaṇa and piṇḍa-dāna at Kolkata's ghats on Sarvapitṛ Amāvasyā, ending Pitṛ Pakṣa. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said there were "zero incidents this time".

The state's Mahālayā event at Eden Gardens formally opened Durgā Pūjā with drone, laser and projection shows, and PM Modi issued Mahālayā greetings. In Bangladesh, Mahālayā was observed at Dhakeshwari National Temple and Ramna Kali Mandir.

Key data

Coastal police launches and boats were deployed at the ghats.

Why it matters

This is the first Durgā Pūjā under the new BJP-led Bengal government, which is putting state resources behind the festival.

GK: did you know?

Pitṛ Pakṣa ends on Sarvapitṛ Amāvasyā, the new moon on which ancestors of all lineages can be honoured.
