Justice V. Lakshminarayanan said "citizens' rights cannot be surrendered to the whims and fancies of the police" and remarked orally that the state was giving Muslims "a bad name".

Justice V. Lakshminarayanan said "citizens' rights cannot be surrendered to the whims and fancies of the police" and remarked orally that the state was giving Muslims "a bad name". A day earlier he had asked why permission keeps being refused in Tamil Nadu when marches are allowed in J&K. He told the RSS North Tamil Nadu unit to file routes and undertakings, and the Advocate General to get the DGP's instructions.
Key data
Proposed march dates 18 Oct, 25 Oct or 1 Nov. Petitioner V.G. Jagadeesan, RSS North TN secretary.
Why it matters
It is the latest round of an annual legal fight between the Tamil Nadu government and the RSS, this time in the Sangh's centenary year, and it reinforces earlier rulings that a mosque on the route is not a valid reason to refuse.
GK: did you know?
