The EC Block pandal, in its golden jubilee year, shows 18 episodes of the Mahābhārata, from Gaṇeśa writing down the epic to Yudhiṣṭhira's ascent. The New Town Sanatani Durga Puja pairs the Devī with themes from AI and robotics.
Its organisers say the puja was held with court permission in 2022 and 2023 and was denied state permission in 2024 and 2025.
Why it matters
Dharmic themes are finding new ways to reach young audiences, while permission disputes remain a flashpoint in Bengal.
GK: did you know?
The Mahābhārata is traditionally organised into 18 parvas, the same number as the days of the Kurukṣetra war and the chapters of the Bhagavad Gītā.
