A bench of Justices Raja Vijayaraghavan V and K.V. Jayakumar ruled on a 2021 petition alleging that halal-certified jaggery was used for the aravaṇa and appam offered to Bhagavān Ayyappa. Lab tests found the jaggery fit for use, but the court said the Board "ought to have exercised greater care" and ordered e-tender conditions so materials conform to quality standards and temple custom.
The same day, the Supreme Court heard a plea seeking central control of the Thirupparankundram Murugan temple.
Why it matters
The ruling recognises that prasādam procurement must respect āgama and temple custom, not just food-safety rules, setting a precedent for devaswom boards and state-run temples.
GK: did you know?
Thirupparankundram is the first of Murugan's six abodes, the Āṟupaṭai Vīṭu.
