The Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath yatra stayed suspended on Sunday. Rocks and debris blocked the Badrinath-Rishikesh highway at Sirobagarh in Pauri, stranding pilgrim vehicles, and the Hemkund Sahib yatra was paused after 6 to 7 inches of snow.

The IMD put 14 states on rain alert. Death figures from Uttar Pradesh differ widely between outlets and are not confirmed.

Key data

2 deaths in Uttarakhand. About 136 mountaineers stranded. Red alerts for Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Champawat, Nainital and Pauri. Tourists told to postpone travel until at least 30 Sep.

Why it matters

Late-season pilgrims face disruption just before the dhāms close for winter, and anyone travelling to the hills should wait for official clearance.

GK: did you know?

Kedarnath, on the Mandākinī river, is one of the 12 Jyotirliṅgas.
