Allahabad High Court: an Arya Samaj certificate alone does not prove a valid Hindu marriage
In Rohit Pandey v.
- Business Standard

In Rohit Pandey v. Union of India, the High Court held that a party relying on a marriage must show that the essential ceremonies under Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 were actually performed.
A certificate is evidence of a marriage, not a substitute for solemnisation.
Key data
Follows the Supreme Court's ruling in Dolly Rani v. Manish Kumar Chanchal (2024).
Why it matters
Arya Samaj marriages remain valid when properly solemnised, but the ruling tightens evidence in matrimonial and succession disputes.
GK: did you know?
Under Section 7(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, where the rites include saptapadī, the marriage becomes complete when the seventh step is taken. Swami Dayananda Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj in Bombay in 1875.
