Sanātana Explained

Why did Sri Ram let Sita Ma go through Agni Pariksha?

“Bro, I heard that Sri Ram asked Sita Ma to walk through fire, just to prove her purity - that’s so sexist & unfair ya.”

No, you’ve been told a big fat lie & here’s the tea.

The controversial Agni Pariksha or “Trial by Fire” episode occurs in the Yuddha Kanda or Book of War in the original Valmiki Ramayana, spanning Sargas 115-118.

Vibhishan is tasked with bringing back Sita from Lanka after Ram’s victory over the demon king Ravan.

Sita is Ram’s Shakti, so he never doubts her for a second. But he is also Ayodhya’s King, bound by Rajadharm - he absolute duty of a ruler to his state. He knows that society will spread malicious rumors regarding the Queen's chastity after her captivity. To protect the integrity of the crown and establish her purity beyond a shadow of a doubt in the eyes of the law and the public, he is forced to prioritise statecraft over his personal emotions. So they both do an elaborate drama.

First, he publicly questions & rejects Sita, throwing harsh, painful words at her. He states that he fought the war to vindicate his honor, not out of attachment, and tells her she is free to go anywhere she wants in all 10 directions.

Here, it’s very critical to understand that Ram’s words are a reflection of society’s mentality & thought process, he is bringing out the suspicion people are silently holding in their minds, not actually attacking Sita as her husband. This is a poetic device used by Valmiki to make us reflect on how we blame victims and treat women in general.

Second, the shocked & trembling Sita claps back at the attack on her dignity. She asks Ram why he is speaking to her as an uncultured man would to an ordinary woman, reminding him that her abduction was not her fault & any physical contact with Ravana was forced and strictly without her consent.

Third, she instructs Lakshmana to set up a pyre. Invoking Agni Dev, she declares that if her heart is pure & hasn’t wavered from her Sri Ram, then let her pass through safely, proceeding to walk into the fire. She does this entirely on her own accord - nobody asks her to.

Fourth, the Gods from heaven rush down, shocked & disturbed. Brahma Dev asks Ram how he could stand by and do such a thing, being the Jagadguru of the universe. Ram replies simply that he considers himself a human - Raja Dasharatha’s son - showing his deliberate forgetfulness of being a Vishnu avatar & the Purna Brahma, just to give us a story full of life lessons.

Fifth, Agni Dev himself carries her out, unharmed, and tells Ram never to treat her harshly again. Ram clarifies that they are inseparable and he never doubted her for a moment; the trial was purely to prove her absolute purity to the world so that society could never question her honour.

Don’t take my word for this - comment AGNI & I’ll send a verified database of the exact verses to you!

Ram fully knew that his action will shift the blame, scrutiny & criticism to himself rather than to Sita - he was prepared to bear the brunt & scorn of the critics to protect Sita’s dignity & honour, so critics who attack him are literally proving his point.

Also to judge this incident from the modern liberal Western lens is a fruitless pursuit - the times were different back then & a king couldn’t just do whatever he wanted for his own whims & fancy. He was answerable to his kingdom. To judge & comment on Ram’s decision without having to bear even 1% of the responsibility on his shoulders is foolishness at best.

Ram wasn't testing his wife out of suspicion. He was executing the brutal burden of Rajadharma, sacrificing his own personal happiness and bearing the immense guilt of being a harsh king just to ensure his Queen's reputation remained untarnished in the annals of history.
