What is Shubham Karoti Kalyanam?
You remember daadi or amma used to make us say this prayer called “Shubham Karoti Kalyanam” in the evenings? What was the reason? As always, it’s scientific & here’s the tea!
So in the evening, the dosha or state of our body called pitta, which is fire, naturally transitions into kapha, which is calmness so saying a prayer is a way of focusing our mind & making the most of this biological rhythmic clock.
The diya or lamp acts as God in front of us because we see agni or fire as holy in Hinduism & we believe that the diya will fight the darkness, not only literally outside but the one in our mind as well.
The prayer for this is “Shubham Karoti Kalyanam, Arogyam Dhana Sampada. Shatru Buddhi Vinaashaaya, Dipa Jyoti namostutte.” It means, “ I’m ready to do good deeds in the evening & be calm, so I bow down to the light of the lamp, which will destory my obstructive thoughts, and bring health, wealth & prosperity to me.”
After this, depending on the language or region you’re from, the words of the shloka can change because different rishis wrote it differently. In Marathi, it’s followed by Divya Divya Deepotkar, Kaani Kundala Motihaar, divyaala pahun namaskar. Yeje Lakshmi Baijge baaje, majhe Ghar tule saaja, tilache, kapsachi vaat, diva laavla tulshi pashi…”
