Cow Urine in Hinduism
“Ew, Hindus drink cow piss, you guys are so gross.”
”Wow, this is the go-to joke for everyone who wants to troll Hinduism w/o. any research so here’s the tea.”
First, when it comes to waste products from any animal, you should know that there’s evidence to prove that all cultures around the world were using them to build houses, fertilize their land, as a manure for livestock, as a bio-fuel, and also as medicine for treating wounds & also internal ailments.
This includes your own white people in ancient Europe, Mesopotemia, Middle Easterners with their camels, Africans, Native Americans & China.
So thanks but don’t give Hindus all the credits.
Second, our Vedas & their children called the Upavedas have named the cow to be holy because it is all-giving, generous, and all of the animal is useful, so it’s a symbollic honour & cow urine is definitely mentioned as one of the Panchagavya’s or 5 gifts, including milk, dung, ghee, and curd.
It is given importance in our smriti texts but the vedas do not have specific verses backing it up anyway.
In any case, peer-reviewed studies do show it to have anti-microbial, anti-fungal propreties which may be beneficial for external use as a cleaning product.
But third, when it comes to drinking it to cure diseases, in those days it may have actually worked because the cows’ were reared in a clean environment so like in the scriptures, it may have been used to treat indigestion, dosha imbalance, blood diseases, skin diseases, and even cancer up to an extent.
But in today’s time, with the abuse & unclealiness that goes on in the animal husbandary sector, the product has definitely lost its purity, effectiveness & potency. There is no way to prove this because we can’t go back in time to compare both urine samples.
So unfortunately, it is true that just cow urine is now a dhanda or business for greedy entrepreneurs & smart Hindus aren’t falling for it.
Science has not yet found solid peer-reviewed evidence to prove that drinking it works but most educated Hindus that I know don’t have it anyways because we don’t need it anymore - we have many other animal-free, cruelty-free, vegan alternatives to keep ourselves healthy.
So there’s no point using it as a joke to diss Hinduism because Sanatan Dharma permits & teaches us to evolve our culture, keeping our values same but our practices aligned with the changing times. So saying that Hindus drink cow piss is a sweeping, overblown, misguided generalization that’s not true.
